What does the minimum wage increase mean for work studies? As a work-study in college, I received the federal minimum wage ($5.15/hour). I saw that the minimum wage increase was passed by Congress; if it goes all the way through, I want to know if I (and my fellow work studies) will receive a raise per hour. My pay does come from a grant, but I could work less and draw the same amount of money if my wage per hour was increased.
Why is the minimum wage different for younger and older workers? In Michigan, the minimum wage for those under the age of 18 is $6.08, and the minimum wage for those over 18 is $7.15. What I am wondering is, why? Why must there be such a difference between wages? Especially in cases where someone under 18 and someone over 18 are doing the same amount of work. Isn't that age discrimination, paying someone less because of their age? I see no reason why this law is in place. I understand labor laws such as maximum working hours. But when the amount of work is the same, shouldn't the pay the same?

What do you think of raising minimum wage in our countries slow immigration to USA? Do you think that if in our countries, we do a survey as to how much it costs to have the basic necesities such as food, clothes, rent, healthcare and education. Then restructure the minimum wage to somewhat meet those minimum standards, would that cause people to lose the incentive to migrate to USA? I was thinking about that for us in Mexico or other latin american countries. Seems that in countries where the minimum wage is very low where people can't afford the basic necesities, they migrate to other countries where the wages are higher.

How does the minimum wage increase work? Basically, if they weren't winning minimum wage before the increase, if the increase passes what they were winning or meets that, would they increase too? Thank you.
Does my work have to pay minimum wage? The current minimum wage in Virginia is $5.15, and it will be going up to $5.85 next month (my work starts at $5.50 now). What is a fair minimum wage for an American citizen? What is a fair minimum wage for an Illegal working in America? And lastly, what is the average hourly wage for a citizen of Mexico or Central or South America. I'd love to hear some opinions. R1 - surely you jest. Unbelievable I'm a capitalist. Wage should be market driven not dictated by the government, And I would venture to say that the average hourly wage south of the "US" border is in the neighborhood of 25 cents an hour. So are we exploiting someone that gets paid 25 cents an hour at home but can make 5 or 6 dollars an hour working in the US? What does raising the minimum wage accomplish? Why not raise it to 10 dollars an hour? $15 an hour. Who cares? The bottom wage earners will still be the bottom wage earners right? People at the top of the pay scale will make more money to adjust with inflation. Prices will rise and inflation will increase. The demand for illegal laborers will increase. People will still buy a new car and a new TV before they buy health insurance. It seems that Democrats think a minimum wage increase will take money from the rich and give it to the poor. Like a Robin Hood effect. Is this really true?
