What were the objectives of the civil rights movements from 1955 to 1972?

It has been said that the dominant or majority cultural and political systems respond to social movements by ignoring them, taking over their goals, or trying to suppress them. Based on that assumption, detail the objectives of the civil rights movements (including but not limited to blacks) from 1955 to 1972. How did those movements change American Society, and how did the society and government respond to the movements?

  1. Supreme court rulings requiring equal treatment were at first ignored. The doctrine of State's rights was invented to ignore supreme court rulings. When the S.Court insisted on its primacy, violence was used to discourage blacks from regsitering to vote. The goals were taken over when freedom marches had participants from all races.
